2025 New Year's Resolutions for Yorktown's Most Beloved Pets

Writer's picture: Caméa AllenCaméa Allen

As we welcome the new year, it’s the perfect opportunity to enhance our pets' lives by making minor improvements to how we care for them. Just like us, our pets thrive when they receive love, attention, and consistent, personalized care. By prioritizing exercise, quality time, dental health, and nutrition, we can ensure our pets lead happy and content lives in 2025 and beyond. Here are my 2025 New Year's resolutions for Yorktown's most beloved pets. Of course, this applies to pets in Poquoson, Newport News, Hampton, and everywhere!

Regular Exercise

Regular exercise is key to a pet’s well-being. Living in Yorktown offers great chances to get our cats and dogs outdoors. Whether a brisk walk or stroll along Riverwalk Landing or a trip to Back Creek Park's Bark Park, exercise is essential for our pets’ physical and mental health. (Read my tips for dog park safety here.)

Studies show that over 50% of dogs are overweight or obese, leading to serious health issues like arthritis and diabetes. Engaging cats and dogs in activities such as fetch, frisbee, or even a simple game of hide-and-seek can burn energy and stimulate their minds.

Don't forget that cats can join you in backpacks and strollers in various local areas. Like most animals, cats love to be outdoors but do best when protected from unfamiliar dogs and kept elevated, especially in extreme temperatures, which they may not be accustomed to.

If exercising your pet is tough due to time constraints and scheduling demands, count on us! We will come over to walk your dog and play with your cat. We're happy to throw the ball around in the yard or engage your pets in play indoors. Check out our adventure walks for more rigorous workouts!

Quality Time

While exercise is vital, spending quality time with our pets is just as important. Pets need companionship and attention to thrive. Simple moments like snuggling on the couch, sharing a short training session, or playing interactive games can greatly improve their overall happiness.

Designate specific times each week to focus solely on your pet. For example, set aside thirty minutes every day just for bonding activities. Try teaching a new trick, brushing them, filling a puzzle with treats and guiding them through it, or exploring a new hobby together, whether yoga or cooking homemade pet treats. The deeper the connection you nurture, the happier your pet will be.

Dental Health

Dental health is often overlooked but is crucial for our pets' overall well-being. It's vital to establish a dental care routine for our pets, as over 80% of dogs show signs of dental disease by age three. Per this article from the Cornell Feline Health Center, "Studies report that between 50 and 90% of cats older than four years of age suffer from some form of dental disease, but fortunately, the most common forms of these diseases are largely preventable or treatable with appropriate preventive dental care and monitoring."

Regular brushing and dental treats can help prevent issues before they start. First, introduce your pet to brushing their teeth gradually. You might also consider using flavored toothpaste designed specifically for the pet species you're caring for. Consult your veterinarian and schedule professional cleanings as part of an annual check-up. Healthy teeth and gums mean a healthier pet, leading to fewer vet visits and a happier companion overall.

When brushing isn't an option, consider a water additive from brands like Teef or Oxyfresh. Teef also makes a food topper.

Nutritious Food Choices

Nutrition significantly impacts our pets' health. With so many brands available, selecting high-quality food can feel overwhelming. This year, resolve to provide your pets with balanced nutrition tailored to their needs.

Research ingredients to find food rich in protein and essential vitamins. For instance, look for options that list meat as the first ingredient. Consulting with a veterinarian can guide you to the right dietary plans based on your pet's age, breed, and daily activity level. Incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables—like carrots, blueberries, or pumpkin—into their diet can serve as tasty, nutritious treats that both you and your pet can enjoy.

When in doubt, visit Gangsta Dog or head a bit further to The Nautical Dog to discuss your pet's current diet and how you can boost it in 2025. You can also find pet nutrition experts like The Pet Parenting Reset online.
