Giving Tuesday is a worldwide initiative to promote generosity and awareness. In honor of Giving Tuesday, we encourage you to consider helping in York County. Today, I'm sharing a few of my favorite - and most deserving - animal welfare organizations in the Hampton Roads area. Please consider these organizations today and every time you wish to donate to a worthy cause.
York County Animal Shelters & Rescues
From pet pantries to wildlife rescue, York County and its environs have many dedicated organizations that are hard at work for the benefit of our communities. Whether they are helping humans or animals, these organizations stand out as some of the best in the area.
Upcoming Local Event Looking For Support
Mark your calendar for the 24th Annual Shop with a Sheriff campaign. On Saturday, December 7, 2024, children will have the opportunity to go Christmas shopping with York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office Deputies.
With the help of local schools, at least 100 children from York County and the City of Poquoson will be selected to participate. Sheriff Ron Montgomery is asking local businesses, community organizations, and individuals to contribute this year. Learn more here.

New Item Donations
Many shelters and rescues have wish lists for items they need for the animals in their care. These items include food, first aid kits, cleaning products, and grooming supplies. If you feel more comfortable donating items than money, check out your preferred organization's website for a wish list. Then, order what you can to be delivered directly to their door.
Used Item Donations
If you're tight on cash and still want to help, animal welfare organizations often need common household products you may be ready to part with. These items include bath towels, blankets, leashes, collars, pet bowls, toys, heating pads, dog brushes, and cat combs,
If, for example, you're holding onto items that you used with a pet that has passed, consider donating them in your pet's memory. While we recognize that it's often very difficult to part with these items, it's usually encouraging when we know that they are going to a worthy cause and an animal in need.
