Introduced by Pet Sitters International (PSI) in 1995, Professional Pet Sitters Week™ takes place annually the first full week of March. Per PSI, “this annual observance honors professional pet-care providers, seeks to educate the pet-owning public about the advantages of professional in-home pet care, and encourages pet-loving entrepreneurs to explore professional pet sitting as a viable career.”

A professional pet sitter is an entrepreneur that has channeled their passion for pets into

creating a reputable pet care business. Professional pet sitters exist all over the world. Some professional pet sitters work independently while others build teams to help a larger number of families.

Most professional pet sitters are locally based and work within a specific service area. As professional pet sitters, we help pet parents with their pet’s care while they are at work, traveling, or otherwise unable to care for them. The majority of professional pet sitters travel to our client's homes to care for their pets. Some pet sitters also do limited boarding and may offer other complementary services such as basic grooming, training, and behavior modification.

In-home pet care has many advantages. The most noteworthy advantage to hiring an in-home pet sitter is that pets remain in their home while their families are away. Because companion animals tend to be most comfortable in their own homes, having a pet care provider come to them alleviates stress while their human companions are at work or traveling.

Another advantage is the ease of engaging a professional pet sitter. Thanks to groups such as the Pet Sitters International, National Association of Professional Pet Sitters, and Fear Free Pets, finding a reputable and trustworthy pet sitter has never been easier. Most established companies like us use technology that facilitates the booking, payment, and communication process, giving pet parents peace of mind no matter how far they may be from home.

Additionally, in-home pet care prevents pet parents from having to transport pets to and from a boarding facility, saving them time before and after work or travel. In-home pet care can also save families money because visits are customized as needed based on travel itineraries, not based on drop-off or pick-up times as they are at most boarding facilities. And, in-home pet sitting prevents the transfer of communicable illnesses because pets are not exposed to pathogens like Bordetella and canine influenza in a facility with other pets. In contrast, most professional pet sitters keep the pets in our care away from strangers during visits both for their safety and our own.

Hearts at Home Pet Sitting was founded based on my lifelong passion for animals, which is the core of our success. Our team provides the highest level of attention to both the pets in our care and the families that love them. Working with animals and partnering with their families is one of the things we most love about the pet sitting industry. We recognize that everyone can use a hand every once in a while and we’re always happy to lend it.
